Elton John's descent into darkness–Learn about his battle and how you can avoid the same fate

The world of music and entertainment was recently shaken by the startling revelation from Sir Elton John, the iconic musician known for his flamboyant style and timeless hits.

At a gala performance of his musical The Devil Wears Prada in London, the 77-year-old legend shared a personal and profound challenge: he had lost his sight just six months prior.

This news has not only stunned his fans but also cast a spotlight on the often-overlooked dangers of eye infections and the importance of eye health. What caused his loss of eyesight and how can you avoid this?

Elton John's ordeal began with an infection in his right eye while in France back in July, which rapidly progressed to complete blindness in that eye and severely limited vision in his left.

Despite his condition, he attended the gala, supported by his husband, David Furnish, and expressed his enjoyment of the performance through listening, even though he could not see it.

“Now, I have lost my sight and I haven't been able to see the performance but I have enjoyed listening to it,” said Elton.

Eye infections, while common, can range from mildly irritating conditions like conjunctivitis to severe infections that threaten sight.

Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is characterized by symptoms such as itching, swelling, and a gritty feeling in the eyes. It's highly contagious and can be caused by bacteria or viruses, leading to inflammation of the conjunctiva, the membrane covering the white part of the eye.

This infection also produces a sticky pus. It usually settles within two to three days, but can last up to two to three weeks. The recommended treatment for this is simply applying a hot compress – soak cotton pads in cooled down boiled water and gently wipe your eyelashes to clean off the crusts.

However, not all eye infections are created equal. Hyperacute bacterial conjunctivitis, for example, is a rapidly progressing infection that can result in a significant discharge of pus and severe complications without prompt treatment.

This type of infection can lead to corneal infiltrates, an inflammatory response that causes pain, cloudy vision, and sensitivity to light. It is usually caused by infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a sexually transmitted disease.

Symptoms can start within 12 hours of infection. In the worst cases, it can cause corneal melting, which can lead to ulcers and, if untreated, permanent vision damage or blindness. Dr. Francis Mah, an ophthalmologist from California, stated, “Hyperacute bacterial conjunctivitis is accompanied by a copious amount of green or gray mucus.”

Without treatment, corneal infiltrates become a possible complication. This causes pain, cloudy vision, and light sensitivity.

In more serious cases of inflammation, the layers of the cornea may dissolve, putting those infected at risk for ulcers.

Uveitis is another serious condition that can lead to vision loss or blindness if not addressed. It involves inflammation of the uvea, the eye's middle layer, and can cause symptoms like dark floating spots, eye pain, redness, and light sensitivity.

Often, uveitis can go undetected for weeks or months, making early detection and treatment crucial. Without treatment, it can cause raised eye pressure, retinal detachment, or macular edema–it’s when fluid and protein build up in the macula that causes it to swell and thicken.

For those who wear contact lenses, the stakes are even higher. Acanthamoeba keratitis is an infection that targets the cornea, causing pain and inflammation.

This infection is preventable, but contact lens wearers are particularly vulnerable, especially if they wear their lenses while bathing, showering, or sleeping.

Early symptoms mimic other eye infections, but without treatment, the pathogen can scar the cornea and lead to blindness over time.

Experts recommend anyone experiencing any early symptoms to stop wearing contact lenses and get in touch with their doctor right away.

Elton thanks his husband, saying, “He added: 'To my husband who's been my rock because I haven't been able to come to many of the previews... it's hard for me to see it but I love to hear it and it sounded good tonight. Thank you for coming.”

Elton John's experience is a powerful reminder of the fragility of our eyesight and the importance of proactive eye care. Here are steps you can take to protect yourself from similar fates:

1. Practice Good Hygiene: Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching your eyes or handling contact lenses.

2. Be Mindful of Contact Lens Care: Follow your optometrist's instructions for lens care, avoid wearing lenses in water, and never sleep in them unless they are specifically designed for overnight wear.

3. Recognize Symptoms Early: If you experience redness, light sensitivity, excessive watering, or any unusual eye discomfort, seek medical attention promptly.

4. Regular Eye Exams: Schedule regular check-ups with your eye doctor to catch any potential issues early.

5. Stay Informed: Educate yourself about the risks and symptoms of different eye infections.
