FDA recalls popular chocolate snack over hidden metal contamination risk

Chocolate snacks are a comfort food for many, which is why a new announcement has startled shoppers across the country.

A popular brand of chocolate-covered strawberries has been pulled from shelves due to a serious safety concern.

Officials say the issue is not about sugar or calories, but rather a dangerous contaminant that could send unsuspecting snackers straight to the hospital.

The nationwide recall is now in effect, and many households may already have these products in their pantry.

On September 30, 2025, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a nationwide recall of select Tru Fru freeze-dried strawberry products.

The culprit? The potential presence of metal fragments in the chocolatey goodness.

The recall was sparked after a customer discovered the issue and reported it to Tru Fru’s third-party manufacturer, Georgia Nut Company.

In a swift response, Tru Fru, LLC voluntarily pulled the affected products from shelves across the country.

If you shop at Albertsons, CVS, Food Lion, H-E-B, Hungryroot, Ingles Markets, Kroger, Stew Leonard’s, or Target, you might want to check your snack stash.

These stores—and possibly others—carried the recalled products.

Why Is This a Big Deal?

While the idea of a little extra crunch in your chocolate might sound harmless, ingesting metal fragments is no joke.

Sharp objects can cause lacerations—think cuts or tears—in your mouth, throat, stomach, or intestines. They can also damage your teeth and gums.

Even if you don’t feel anything right away, swallowing metal can lead to serious health complications down the line.

So far, no injuries have been reported, but the FDA and Tru Fru aren’t taking any chances. And neither should you.

What Should You Do If You Have the Recalled Snack?

1. Don’t Eat It!

Even if it looks and smells fine, don’t risk it. Toss the bag in the trash.

2. Get Your Money Back

Tru Fru is offering refunds in the form of coupons. Just fill out their online reimbursement form (details on their website) to claim your coupon.

3. Contact for Questions

If you have questions or concerns, you can call Tru Fru at (888) 293-7748 or email them.

4. See a Doctor If Needed

If you think you may have eaten some of the recalled product and are experiencing pain, discomfort, or unusual symptoms, contact your healthcare provider right away.

This isn’t the only food recall making headlines lately. The USDA recently issued a health alert for certain frozen and ready-to-eat meals linked to a listeria outbreak, and Tyson Foods recalled millions of pounds of frozen meat products due to contamination concerns.

It’s a good time to double-check your freezer and pantry, especially if you’re stocking up for the fall and winter months.
