February’s Many Names
Unlike other months named after Roman gods, February gets its name from Februalia, an ancient Roman cleansing festival meant for a fresh start. It was a time to wash away the old and prepare for the longer, brighter days ahead—especially in the Northern Hemisphere as spring approached.
But that’s not the only name it has had! In old England, people called it “cake-month” (Sol-monath) because they offered cakes to their gods. Others named it “sprout-kale”, after early-growing cabbages. And in Wales, it’s sometimes known as “the little month” (y mis bach)—fitting for the shortest month of the year!
