Why is Japan Airlines offering free flights?

Japan Airlines launched this offer to encourage tourism beyond Tokyo, Japan’s most-visited destination.

By giving travelers a free domestic flight to one of JAL’s 64 destinations across the country, the airline hopes to spread out visitor traffic and support tourism in less crowded regions.

The deal is available to travelers from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, India, and several other countries.

How the offer works

Here’s how to take advantage of this special promotion:

  1. Book your international flight to Japan with Japan Airlines.
  2. Add a domestic destination on the same reservation—such as Kyoto, Sapporo, Fukuoka, Okinawa, or Hiroshima.
  3. Pay nothing extra for that domestic flight—unless you’re from the US, Canada, Mexico, or China and you stay in your arrival city (usually Tokyo) more than 24 hours before heading onward. In that case, there’s a $100 stopover fee.
  4. Pack with ease—JAL offers generous baggage allowances:
    • Economy and premium economy: two checked bags (up to 50 pounds each)
    • Business and first class: three checked bags (up to 70 pounds each)

  • Niseko – A favorite for skiing and relaxing in hot springs
  • Okinawa – A tropical paradise with white-sand beaches and unique island culture
  • Kanazawa – Famous for its preserved samurai district and Kenrokuen Garden
  • Beppu – A city known for its hot springs and mountain views
  • Hiroshima – Rich in history and home to the Peace Memorial Park

Tips for making the most of your trip

  • Book early: There's no set expiration date for the promotion, but seats may be limited—especially during cherry blossom season or autumn foliage.
  • Consider multi-city routes: Fly into Tokyo and out of a different city to maximize your itinerary.
  • Pack smart: While checked luggage is included, Japan’s trains and smaller accommodations often have limited space.
  • Explore off the beaten path: Japan’s lesser-known cities and towns often offer memorable, authentic experiences.

To take advantage of the offer, visit the Japan Airlines website or speak with a travel agent.

Be sure to select your domestic flight when you book your international ticket—this is the key to getting it for free.
