Mondelēz Global LLC is voluntarily recalling several sizes of Ritz Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches. The issue stems from a packaging error.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, some of the individually wrapped snacks inside larger multi-pack cartons may be mislabeled.
While the outer packaging is correctly labeled and does include an allergen warning that the product contains peanuts, the inside individual packs may be mistakenly marked as cheese instead of peanut butter.
This could lead to unintentional peanut consumption by individuals with severe peanut allergies. The FDA lists peanuts among the nine major allergens in the US.
For those with peanut allergies, even trace amounts can trigger serious or life-threatening reactions.
Symptoms of allergic reactions may include hives, swelling, shortness of breath, or in severe cases, anaphylactic shock.
Despite no reports of illness or injury as of the latest update, the recall is being issued out of an abundance of caution.
The products affected include three specific packaging sizes of the same snack. These are the 8-pack, 20-pack, and 40-pack cartons of peanut butter cracker sandwiches.
Also included in the recall is the 20-pack variety carton of filled cracker sandwiches. Only the individually wrapped snacks inside the multi-packs are impacted by the mislabeling issue.

The outer boxes correctly indicate that the product contains peanuts and display the appropriate allergen advisory.
No other products made by Mondelēz Global LLC are affected at this time.
Consumers are urged to review the FDA recall page, which includes a full chart with best if used by dates, product photos, and corresponding UPC numbers.
The affected products were manufactured in the US and distributed nationwide.
The cause of the labeling mix-up has been traced back to a supplier-related packaging defect.
Film rolls used in wrapping the individual snacks may have been printed with the incorrect label due to this error.
According to the FDA, “The recall was initiated after Mondelēz Global LLC discovered that film packaging rolls used to package individually wrapped products containing peanut butter may contain defects due to a supplier error.”
The company has announced that corrective actions are underway to ensure this issue doesn’t recur. No other flavors, package types, or similar items under the same brand are currently under recall.
