Pull up a seat, GrayViners. “The Friend Who Keeps Bringing Up Politics” is feeling worn down by a lifelong bond that’s started to fray. What happens when years of laughter and loyalty collide with deep political divides?

Hi all,

I have been friends with the same woman for almost forty years. We met at church, raised our children at the same time, and have seen each other through losses and triumphs. Lately, though, every conversation seems to turn into an argument. She has become obsessed with politics. No matter what we start talking about—a TV show, a recipe, even the weather—she somehow finds a way to make it about who’s right and who’s wrong in our state.

I’ve tried to change the subject politely, but she won’t let it go. Last week, I suggested that we talk about something else, and she snapped, “You can’t just bury your head in the sand forever.” It stung. I don’t want to fight. I just want to enjoy her company like we used to.

I miss the days when we laughed about our grandkids or swapped gardening tips. Now, every time the phone rings and I see her name, I hesitate to pick up. I know she means well and thinks she’s standing up for her beliefs, but I’m tired of being lectured.

Is it wrong to take a step back from someone who has become exhausting to be around, even if they’ve been part of your life for decades?

Yours truly,
The Friend Who Keeps Bringing Up Politics

What do you think, GrayViners? Can friendship survive when politics becomes the third wheel? Have you ever had to distance yourself from someone you love because you just couldn’t see eye to eye anymore? You need to preserve your peace. I would start by keeping her calls to a minimum. If you don't feel like answering the phone, don't. She will hopefully figure it out. She can't argue if you are not available. The worst-case scenario is to block, but only if she continues to persist.
