Frozen favorites pulled from shelves—here’s why you should check yours

When you reach for a frozen meal, you expect a hassle-free dinner—not a potential risk.

But a recent voluntary recall has some consumers second-guessing what’s in their freezer.

A major food company is pulling certain products due to safety concerns, leaving many to wonder if their favorite quick meals are affected.

On a seemingly ordinary Monday, Nestlé USA set off alarms by announcing a voluntary recall of select Lean Cuisine and Stouffer's frozen meals.

The reason? A possible contaminant that could turn a casual dinner into a choking hazard.

The recall was not a decision made in haste. It came "after consumers contacted Nestlé USA about this issue, including one potential choking incident to date," as stated by the company in its recall announcement.

Nestlé USA has been transparent about the situation, stating that they are working closely with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Agriculture to ensure the recall is handled with the utmost care and efficiency.

The company's statement, released on March 17 and later shared on the FDA website, emphasized their commitment to investigating the source of the “wood-like material” found in some meals.

"We are actively investigating the source of the wood-like material. We are confident that this is an isolated issue, and we have taken action to address it," Nestlé USA said in a statement.

The recall affects a variety of meals that have become staples in many American households. The list includes:

These products were distributed to major stores between September 2024 and March 2025 and were produced from August 2024 through March 2025.

It's important to note that not all Lean Cuisine and Stouffer's meals are part of the recall, so there's no need to clear out your entire freezer—just the items mentioned.

A complete list of affected meals, including batch numbers and best-by dates, can be found on the Nestlé USA website and the FDA website.

This isn't the first time Lean Cuisine has faced a recall.

In December 2020, Nestlé Prepared Foods had to recall its Lean Cuisine Baked Chicken meal products due to potential plastic contamination.

If you have any of the recalled meals in your freezer, Nestlé USA advises against preparing or consuming them. Instead, you can return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund or a replacement meal.

For those who prefer a more direct approach, Nestlé has provided a customer service number—(800) 681-1676—available Monday through Friday from 9 am to 6 pm ET.
