But with Sam’s Club covering 90% of its locations and pushing for even more improvements, many drivers are calling it a serious edge.
The retail giant has extended operating hours at 90% of its gas stations, meaning early risers and night owls alike can now access fuel starting at 6 am, with pumps staying open later than before.
Walmart’s fuel push is going even further
Sam’s Club’s parent company, Walmart, is ramping up its investment in fuel access with plans to add or revamp more than 45 fuel and convenience stations by 2025.
This brings Walmart’s total number of fuel locations to 450 across 34 states—just one more way the company is keeping pace with customer needs.
“Customers shop Walmart for our everyday low prices and convenience offerings, and the fuel stations are another example of us responding to our customer and member needs,” said Walmart US Vice President of Fuel and Convenience Dave DeSerio.
But there’s a twist—some members are seeing big changes
Amid all the expansion, one update is sparking mixed reactions: Sam’s Club appears to be phasing out physical membership cards.
One customer reported that all membership access is now handled through the mobile app.
The change is reportedly intended to reduce shared accounts and ensure benefits are used only by paying members.
Some shoppers say they’ve been told their physical cards no longer work once a digital card is activated.
Costco recently expanded its gas station hours and introduced a 5% cashback perk for members using the Costco Anywhere Visa Card.
While that’s a strong offer, many Sam’s Club members are still praising the broader fuel availability as a more immediate win.
Walmart+ members, for example, can already get 10 cents off per gallon when fueling up at eligible locations.
