General Discussion Thread 03.21.2025

Good morning, GrayViners! It’s Friday—a perfect time to reflect on the week. Whether you’re gearing up for a busy weekend or planning to kick back and relax, I (Sophia) hope it’s filled with joy and ease.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about this playful quote from Dr. Seuss: "You don’t have to be crazy to live in this world, but it helps." It’s a fun reminder that a little chaos makes life interesting! So, here’s a question to start the conversation: What’s a quirky childhood memory that makes you think, "I must’ve been a little crazy back then"? I’d love to hear your stories!

And if that doesn’t spark a memory, feel free to share whatever's on your mind—whether it’s a heartwarming moment from this week, a fun fact you just learned, or something that made you smile. This space is yours to connect, reflect, and engage with your fellow GrayViners.

Let’s kick off the weekend with some good energy—share your stories, memories, or whatever’s on your mind below and let’s brighten up this Friday together!

What’s going through YOUR mind today?

The quote I've been thinking about is "help I've fallen, and I can't get up." I fell down my basement stairs a little over a week ago. My right leg is bruised and swollen. Very tender to the touch. Finally, today at the hounding of my sister I finally made a Dr. apptmt. I keep forgetting I'm not as young as I used to be. :)

I used to go down a gully and follow a creek until I was under an overpass for a major highway. I was about 11 years old and no one knew where I was or knew how to find me if they needed me. I think about if one of my kids did that today. NO WAY! Sad to say it wouldn't be safe.

Thinking as a young age, took a bus to go to Nashville to visit friends. Got stranded in Chicago bus stop for 30 hrs due to a blizzard. Headed out in another bus, slid of highway into a ditch backwards in Gary Ind, iced roads. But finally arrived. No cell phones in those days.

Riding down Dead Man's Hill on my bicycle full speed not worrying about any cars merging down the hill

We grew up on a small farm and my dad liked to take real slow drives in our old pick-up on gravel roads on Sunday. My sister and I road in the bed which had a stock rack with a log chain fastener. We would grab the chain and jump out of the truck bed , running like crazy to keep from getting dragged or from losing a grip that would get us left behind. Our parents never knew. Sure was some stupid fun!

I loved nature, so when a momma skunk and her babies were killed a little way from our house, I rode there on my bicycle to see her. There were two babies alive, so my friend took one and I took the other. My little guy seemed lonely, so I went back to the dead mother, tied her tail to my bike's fender, and rode home...not realizing I was leaving her scent behind me. Then my mom decided a pet skunk was not a good idea, and I had to set the little guy free.

Another time I tried to climb a tree to get a baby crow for a pet. Just before I reached the nest, every crow in the county came to protect the babies. I had to climb down and escape by crawling through the bushes.

Then there was the time I saw a wolf and tried to track it to its den in hope of capturing a wolf pup for a pet. When I got to the den, there was a deep growl, and I ran home. My brothers came back with me, but the wolves had moved to another det.

I could go on and on with stories. My two little brothers and I had fun learning about nature!

When living in W Nebraska the Platte River was behind us and there was a large tributory which we played in alot. Not knowing how to swim and it was full of water moccasins so needless to say we were banned from playing in it. So again, adventuresome kids, we played in the irrigation ditches. Again, water and not knowing how to swim. And none of us ever learned.
