National Chicken Wing Day began in 1977 when Buffalo mayor Stan Makowski proclaimed July 29 a day to celebrate the city’s wing obsession.

Once considered a throwaway cut, wings rose in popularity during the 1960s and became a game-day and party favorite by the 1980s.

Wings cost more—but not on July 29

Prices for wings have increased about 2.4% over the past two years, according to data from Toast, a digital payment platform used by more than 140,000 restaurants.
