"Personally, it’s too bad for the area too because the more closed down the area is, the harder it’s going to be, just like the houseless people," shopper Carolyn Kopecky told Hawaii News Now, noting the wider effects of losing a retail anchor.


The Silver Lining

Though the closures are a blow to the community, there’s a silver lining for employees.

Those affected have been offered transfers to other locations, and Ross still maintains a strong presence in Hawaii with 15 stores across the state.

Ross’s Financial Picture

Ross Stores Inc. has long been a success, with over 2,000 locations nationwide. In its November 2024 earnings report, the company posted a net income of $489 million for the 13-week period ending November 2, surpassing the previous year's performance.

However, CEO Barbara Rentler expressed some disappointment in the third-quarter sales, which slowed compared to the first half of the year. Despite this, Rentler remains optimistic about the company's commitment to value and its potential for profitable growth.
