Have You Ever Seen Something Like This?
In rare atmospheric conditions, sunlight can appear to form a glowing vertical beam in the sky—like a candle burning just above the horizon. This striking optical illusion is called a sun candle, or sun pillar.
It happens when sunlight reflects off flat, hexagon-shaped ice crystals suspended high in the atmosphere. As these crystals gently drift and align, they act like tiny mirrors, sending shafts of light upward or downward—often seen during sunrise or sunset when the air is cold and crisp. Nature’s version of a spotlight, sun candles are a gentle reminder that the sky still holds wonders we don’t always expect.
