Council member Jennie Robinson pushed for a more effective approach. With help from the city’s legal team, she helped craft a new ordinance that enforces stricter penalties and gives law enforcement more authority.

Now, drivers caught violating the noise limit will face increasing fines with each offense.

The Penalties – How Much Could You Pay?

The new law sets escalating fines for repeat offenders:

First offense – $50 fine
Second offense (within 12 months) – $250 fine
Third offense (within 12 months) – $500 fine and possible 10 days in jail

Police will now have the power to enforce the rule not just on public roads, but also in parking lots and other gathering places—a move specifically targeting car meets where drivers show off loud modifications.

Sergeant Chris Jackson of the Huntsville Police Department believes the law will significantly reduce noise complaints and give officers the ability to act in areas they previously couldn’t.

Noise Laws Are Expanding Nationwide

This crackdown on noisy vehicles isn’t just happening in Alabama.

Other states are rolling out new driving laws in 2025, focusing on issues like street racing, car seat regulations, and distracted driving.

Colorado - Bans on handheld devices while driving
Illinois - Digital driver’s licenses are now allowed
Kentucky - Vision tests required for license renewal
Oregon - New school bus safety laws
Texas - Vehicle safety inspections are being eliminated
