A soft, golden voice that once lit up radios across America has fallen silent.

A beloved singer-songwriter best known for his timeless hit Poetry in Motion—has passed away at the age of 86, leaving behind a rich musical legacy and generations of fans who still hum his melodies.

Known not just for his chart-topping tunes but for his warmth, humility, and unwavering gratitude to his listeners, Tillotson's passing marks the end of an era for many who grew up with his music.

A Humble Start with Big Dreams

Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Tillotson showed signs of musical talent early on.

He performed at local functions and sang on radio stations as a young boy, showcasing a natural charisma that hinted at the star he would become.

Despite earning a journalism degree from the University of Florida in 1959, his path veered toward Nashville, where fate and a fateful tape recording would soon change everything.

His big break came after a local DJ submitted a recording of his voice to the National Pet Milk Talent Contest.

That entry caught the attention of a Nashville music publisher, who introduced him to Archie Blyer, the founder of Cadence Records.

A record deal soon followed, launching a career that would span decades.

A Legacy Etched in Melody

Tillotson’s breakout hit "Poetry in Motion" skyrocketed to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1960, captivating audiences with its catchy rhythm and heartfelt lyrics.

It didn’t take long for the young artist to become a household name. But Tillotson was no one-hit wonder.

Songs like "Talk Back Trembling Lips," "You Can Never Stop Me Loving You," and "It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin’" showcased his ability to seamlessly blend pop, country, and R&B—a rare versatility that earned him fans across musical genres.

"It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin’" became especially iconic, later covered by legends including Dean Martin, Bobby Darin, and Elvis Presley.

His contributions were recognized with two Grammy nominations: Best Country and Western Recording in 1962 for "It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin’," and Best Contemporary (R&R) Vocal Performance in 1966 for "Heartaches by the Number."

But beyond accolades, it was his connection with audiences that defined his success. His songs weren’t just played—they were felt.

Music Until the End

Even in his later years, Tillotson remained devoted to music.

Just days before his passing, he released a final song—"Everything I Touch Turns to Blue"—a fitting farewell that echoed the themes of love, longing, and vulnerability that had defined his songwriting from the start.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Nancy; his son John and daughter-in-law; his stepdaughter Genevieve; and grandchildren Nia, Jackson, Georgia, and Gwyneth.

He also leaves behind his brother Dan, sister-in-law Virginia, and many nieces and nephews who mourn the loss of a man whose life was defined by heart and harmony.
