He left the bride, the guests, and the vows behind in their "just married" car… but it’s not with his other woman

Weddings are meant to be joyful celebrations, thoughtfully organized down to the tiniest detail, and filled with meaningful, heartfelt moments that bring everyone together.

But as anyone who has actually stood at the altar can tell you, reality often has a way of crashing the party without any warning or courtesy.

Sometimes, instead of a fairytale ending, it shows up in a getaway car—one that happens to have the wrong person riding shotgun, completely upending expectations.

The bride wasn’t the one in that seat when the car pulled away—it was the best man, leaving a trail of questions and disbelief behind.

The bride shared the story on Reddit, calling the wedding a “disaster” and explaining that her husband ignored her one firm boundary.

“I could tell my husband was gonna be trouble 'cause I said, 'Don't smash that cake in my face when we cut it!'” she wrote. “And what does he do? I saw it coming and only got some, but I was not pleased.”

The wedding was held at the groom’s family home and seemed to be going according to plan—until it didn’t.

The car was decorated “all decked out with ‘Just Married’ and freaking cans tied to it,” according to the bride.

But after heading back inside for what she thought would be a final goodbye, she came back out to find the car pulling away. “Him and his bestie are getting in the car and driving across town to our apartment,” she wrote.

The bride was left to hitch a ride from her maid of honor while the groom sped off with someone else. “Now I gotta get my MOH to drive my ass and I don’t get my cute AF car!” she added.

Online commenters were quick to take her side and quicker still to criticize the groom. “Cake smashing is a humiliation ritual, as is leaving you at the reception to hightail it with another man,” one person wrote.

Some speculated about the groom’s relationship with his best friend, while others simply questioned his priorities.

“Your husband left your reception with the best man,” one commenter said. “They’re very happy together. But he doesn’t like you very much.”

Despite the chaos, the bride says the marriage not only survived but grew stronger over time. “He was definitely immature and thinking of his friend more than me… it’s a bromance I condone,” she wrote in a follow-up.

“We were so young. And you know what? So in love. And we’re still in it together so maybe something wasn’t all wrong after all?”

She called both herself and her husband “hot messes” and said that’s part of why they work. “I’m just as much of a hot mess as he is, which makes us soulmates and why we deserve each other.”

The couple recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. And yes, the groom and best man are “still besties 20 years later.”
