A recent privacy incident tied to a major retailer has opened the door for millions to potentially claim compensation.

If you’ve made a purchase from this major retailer in the past, you might be eligible for a surprising payout—possibly even thousands.



In June 2024, a group of cybercriminals known as RansomHub pulled off a digital heist, impersonating a Rite Aid employee to gain unauthorized access to a treasure trove of personal information.

The breach laid bare the names, addresses, birth dates, driver's licenses, and other government IDs of millions of unsuspecting customers.

The aftershocks of the breach were felt far and wide. Rite Aid, already grappling with financial woes that led to the closure of nearly 900 stores and a brush with bankruptcy, found itself at the center of a storm of criticism.

Customers were up in arms over the delay in being notified about the breach, which took a full month after the incident was discovered.

The legal battles that ensued culminated in a $6.8 million settlement, with Rite Aid maintaining its innocence but conceding that the breach could have been prevented.

As part of the settlement, the company has committed to bolstering its cybersecurity measures, building on the enhancements made in the previous year.

How to Stake Your Claim
If you're one of the affected customers, it's time to act. Here's what you need to know.


  • Eligibility: You're eligible if your personal information was compromised in the breach, which affected transactions between June 6, 2017 and July 30, 2018.
  • Compensation: You could receive up to $10,000 by providing “reasonable documentation” of your losses. This might include bank statements, credit card statements, invoices, and receipts that show the financial impact of the breach.
  • No Proof, No Problem: Even if you can't provide documentation, you may still be eligible for compensation. Don't let a lack of paperwork deter you from filing a claim.
  • Deadline: Mark your calendar for July 7. That's the cutoff for filing a claim, with payments set to be distributed after July 17.

Rite Aid's journey through bankruptcy was a rocky one, with the data breach adding fuel to the fire. The pharmacy chain's financial struggles were compounded by lawsuits accusing them of contributing to the opioid crisis through the oversupply of prescription painkillers.

After closing hundreds of stores and paying off $2 billion in debt, Rite Aid emerged from bankruptcy as a private company in September 2024.

With around 1,300 locations remaining, the company is still on the path of restructuring, including the planned closure of additional underperforming stores.
