Health alert: Snack recall affects over 40 states

If you’ve stocked up on fruit snacks from Sam’s Club lately—either for yourself or the grandkids—you may want to take a closer look at the box.

A new nationwide recall has been issued for a popular fruit variety pack due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a harmful bacteria that poses a higher risk for older adults, young children, pregnant women, and anyone with a weakened immune system.

No illnesses have been reported so far, but the danger is significant enough that the product is being pulled from shelves.

The company behind the snack discovered the issue through routine testing and is working with federal agencies to alert consumers.

Here’s what you need to know about the recall, the health risks, and what steps to take if you have this snack at home.

Why the product was recalled

The recall was initiated by Doehler Dry Ingredient Solutions, LLC after internal tests detected Listeria in their Member’s Mark Freeze Dried Fruit Variety Pack.

The affected products were sold from July 1 to July 25, 2025, and distributed to Sam’s Club stores in over 40 states, including Texas, Florida, California, New York, and Illinois.

While no illnesses have been linked to the product at this time, the company and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stress that consumers should not take any chances.

Listeria can survive cold temperatures and still make you sick even if the fruit appears and smells normal.

The health risks of listeriosis

Listeria monocytogenes is more than just a common foodborne bacteria—it can cause a severe infection called listeriosis.

For most healthy adults, symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal discomfort.

However, for vulnerable groups like seniors or individuals with compromised immune systems, the infection can lead to serious complications such as sepsis, meningitis, or even death.

Pregnant women are especially at risk, as listeriosis can result in miscarriage, stillbirth, or premature delivery.

What to do if you have the product

If the recalled product is in your pantry or freezer, here’s what you should do:

  1. Do not eat it. Even a small amount could be dangerous for certain individuals.
  2. Throw it away. Dispose of the entire contents immediately. Do not donate or give it to others.
  3. Request a refund. Sam’s Club is offering full refunds for affected purchases. You can bring your receipt or the packaging to any Sam’s Club store.

How the issue was discovered

While any food recall can be unsettling, this one may offer some reassurance: the contamination was caught through the company’s own quality control process before any illnesses were reported.

The swift response demonstrates how safety protocols—both internal and federal—are designed to protect the public before harm occurs.

About listeria and how to avoid it

Listeria is often found in soil, water, and animal products, and it can contaminate a wide variety of foods including cheese, deli meat, produce, and now freeze-dried fruits.

Unlike other bacteria, Listeria can grow in cold environments like refrigerators, which makes it especially concerning.

Symptoms of listeriosis usually develop within a few days to several weeks and may include:

  • Fever and chills
  • Muscle aches
  • Headache or stiff neck
  • Confusion or loss of balance
  • Nausea or diarrhea

If you or a loved one experiences these symptoms after consuming recalled food, seek medical attention right away.

Tips for staying safe

Food recalls are a good reminder to be proactive about food safety. Here are a few things you can do:

  • Stay informed: Sign up for recall alerts through the FDA and USDA
  • Practice good hygiene: Wash hands, tools, and surfaces often, especially after handling packaged food.
  • Check packaging: Always review labels, expiration dates, and lot numbers—especially after hearing about a recall.
  • Be cautious: If something doesn’t feel right, toss it. Your health is more important than saving a few dollars.
