This momentous event marks his first such appearance since the start of his second term, and anticipation is running high.

For our GrayVine community, staying informed and engaged with the political process is crucial, and we're here to ensure you have front-row access to this historic address.

President Trump will speak to a joint session of Congress tonight, which serves as the first time he will address both chambers since he returned to office nearly two months ago.

Before we dive into the “how-to,” let's unpack the significance of this event. A President's address to Congress is a tradition steeped in history, offering a platform to outline the administration's vision and legislative agenda.

While not officially a State of the Union, this Address to a Joint Session of Congress is a pivotal moment for the President to rally support and set the tone for the coming years.

House Speaker Mike Johnson's invitation to President Trump to “share his America First vision” underscores the high stakes and potential for these next four years to be among the most consequential in our nation's history.

In a letter to the president, the speaker wrote that the Trump administration and the Republican majorities in Congress will "have the chance to make these next four years some of the most consequential in our nation's history."

"America's Golden Age has begun," Johnson said in the letter, echoing a line from Mr. Trump's inaugural address, while touting a "resurgence of patriotism, unity, and hope for the future."

The theme of his speech is “The Renewal of the American Dream.” In his speech, the president is expected to emphasize his administration's accomplishments, including economic policies, border security measures, and foreign policy plans. Late Monday, he posted on Truth Social, vowing to "TELL IT LIKE IT IS!"

The address is scheduled to begin shortly after 9 pm ET, and while its duration is uncertain, history suggests we could be looking at an 80-minute speech. This is based on his State of the Union addresses averaging 80 minutes, according to the American Presidency Project.

His speech will be succeeded by the official Democratic response to be delivered by Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan.

For those who prefer the traditional viewing experience, CBS News will broadcast the address and the subsequent Democratic response live, starting at 9 p.m. ET. Check your local listings to find your CBS station.

Mr. Trump's address to Congress comes six weeks after beginning his second term in office.

So far, Americans acknowledge that his administration is enacting major government changes, though opinions remain divided on whether these shifts are beneficial or detrimental.

One of the administration’s most significant initiatives has been a sweeping overhaul of the federal bureaucracy, led by Elon Musk, who was appointed to head the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

DOGE has been working with Cabinet officials to downsize the government workforce and curb federal spending.

In response, several Democrats are bringing former government employees affected by these cuts as guests to Tuesday’s address to underscore the personal impact of these policies.

On immigration, the administration has ramped up border security through a broad government-wide crackdown.

Illegal border crossings have dropped significantly in Mr. Trump's first month, but his efforts to carry out what he has called the largest deportation operation in US history have faced hurdles.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has struggled with detention center overcrowding, operating above 110% capacity, and top agency officials have been reassigned due to concerns over insufficient arrests and deportations.

While Mr. Trump's immigration policies have seen support in recent polling, Americans overwhelmingly prioritize inflation and economic issues.

At the same time, his administration has imposed tariffs that have sparked fears of a trade war. On Tuesday, a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico, as well as increased levies on Chinese goods, took effect, prompting retaliatory measures from affected countries.

In Congress, Republicans are working to advance Mr. Trump’s agenda, though they face challenges with a narrow House majority and internal disagreements.

The House recently passed a budget resolution supporting the president’s border security, defense, and energy initiatives while extending the 2017 tax cuts. However, its fate in the Senate remains uncertain as lawmakers pursue alternative strategies.

Internationally, Mr. Trump's return to the White House has already had significant consequences.

Last week, a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy turned contentious, culminating in Zelenskyy being asked to leave without signing a crucial multibillion-dollar rare earth minerals agreement. The White House later announced a pause in military aid to Ukraine.

The dispute follows Mr. Trump’s remarks appearing to blame Ukraine for the ongoing war while declining to criticize Russian President Vladimir Putin, instead labeling Zelenskyy a “dictator.”

The US has supplied Ukraine with billions in military aid since Russia’s invasion three years ago, and a fracture in US-Ukraine relations could have serious implications for Ukraine’s defense strategy.
