Imagine eating your sunscreen—this new ice cream collab makes it possible

The end of summer often brings a mix of nostalgia, fading beach memories, and brands looking for ways to keep the season alive in people’s minds.

This year, one collaboration between a cruise line and a popular ice cream maker is taking that idea to an unexpected place.

Instead of a traditional farewell to the season, they are introducing a flavor that tastes like the essence of summer itself.

Whether people actually want to eat it remains to be seen, but the experiment is already sparking a flood of attention.

Carnival Cruise Line has partnered with Van Leeuwen Ice Cream to debut what they call a sunscreen-flavored ice cream.

The collaboration was announced on September 8 as a playful attempt to ease what Carnival described as the “End-of-Summer Scaries.”

At the moment, the flavor exists only within the scope of a marketing campaign designed to generate conversation.

However, the companies have hinted that if the buzz continues to grow, they may consider releasing it in stores for a limited run.

Reaction on social media was swift, loud, and overwhelmingly enthusiastic, with fans eager to imagine what a scoop of sunscreen-inspired ice cream might actually taste like.

“Amazing, give me 14 of them right now!” one person wrote, while another commented, “Not a want but a neeeeed!”

A promotional video posted by Carnival has already gained more than 69,000 views in just a matter of days.

The viral interest demonstrates how a playful, offbeat flavor can become a cultural talking point almost overnight.

Actor Jonathan Bennett joined in on the campaign and offered his own first-hand impression after sampling the ice cream.

“It does taste like sunscreen, but in a good way,” Bennett explained in a video shared online. He added that the flavor was reminiscent of coconut, joking that it “tastes like you’re eating vacation.”

His comments only fueled speculation among fans, with many guessing whether the recipe leaned toward coconut, banana, or vanilla notes.

For now, sunscreen-flavored ice cream is not available for purchase, but both companies continue to gauge the response carefully.

Carnival and Van Leeuwen have made it clear that if enough consumer demand exists, they would be open to rolling out the flavor for a short period.

The idea reflects a larger trend of brands experimenting with humor, nostalgia, and seasonal emotion to connect with audiences.

Even if it never leaves the marketing stage, the flavor has already succeeded in keeping summer alive in conversation a little longer.
