Is there a link between living near the ocean and living longer? New research offers clues

You know that peaceful feeling you get by the ocean—the calm that settles in as the waves roll and the air takes on that salty scent?

It turns out that feeling might be more than just a vacation mindset.

New research from The Ohio State University suggests that living near the coast could actually be linked to a longer life.

The reasons go beyond scenic views, pointing instead to a mix of health, environmental, and lifestyle factors.

From cleaner air to gentler temperatures, coastal living may offer surprising advantages for aging well.

What researchers found about coastal living

The study analyzed more than 66,000 US census records and found that people who lived within 30 miles of the ocean lived about one year longer than the national average of 79 years.

That’s not a small difference.

Urban dwellers, on the other hand—no matter how close they lived to rivers or lakes—averaged closer to 78 years.

Lead researcher Jianyong "Jamie" Wu said the longer life expectancy near the coast is likely due to a combination of cleaner air, fewer heatwaves, better walkability, and more recreational space.

Coastal areas also tend to offer slightly higher incomes and more reliable public transit, which can contribute to a healthier lifestyle overall.

Why ocean access matters more than other “blue spaces”

While any body of water can be soothing, researchers found the ocean had unique benefits not matched by lakes or rivers.

Coastal areas had consistently fewer hot days and dangerous heat spikes.

This is especially important for older adults, since heat stress is linked to accelerated aging and other health risks.

So while a lakeside view is nice, the ocean breeze may offer more protection in the long run.

The ocean’s hidden health benefits

According to the study, these key factors could help explain the coastal advantage:

  • Cleaner air. Sea breezes carry away pollutants, offering a break from smog and dust common in urban environments.
  • Mild temperatures. The ocean acts like a natural temperature regulator, reducing extremes.
  • Fewer heatwaves. This helps reduce strain on the body, especially for seniors and people with chronic illness.
  • More physical activity. Beaches, paths, and boardwalks encourage walking, swimming, and fresh-air movement.
  • Better mental health. Natural ocean sounds and views are associated with lower stress and better sleep.

It’s not just the waves—it’s the lifestyle

Income and access to services matter too.

Coastal residents in the study were more likely to have better transit access, greater income, and more healthcare options.

These advantages all add up to better outcomes over time.

But the researchers emphasized that you don’t need to own beachfront property to enjoy the benefits. Even short trips to the shore can offer a meaningful health boost.

What about inland water? Still good—just not quite the same

While living near rivers and lakes didn’t show the same impact on lifespan, that doesn’t mean those places aren’t worth visiting.

Nature, in any form, is known to lower stress and encourage movement.

So if the coast is far away, spending time near a local lake, stream, or even park fountain can still be valuable for your health and mood.

Simple ways to bring the ocean to you

Even if you live nowhere near a shoreline, you can still borrow some of the ocean’s magic:

  • Plan a trip when you can. Weekend beach getaways offer real benefits, even in short doses.
  • Spend time near any water. Ponds, pools, or rivers still provide calming sights and sounds.
  • Decorate with sea tones. Colors like blue, teal, and sandy beige can create a soothing atmosphere.
  • Use ocean soundtracks. Wave sounds can help with sleep and relaxation.
  • Try ocean breathing. Mindful breathing techniques can mimic the calming rhythm of the sea.

While not everyone can move to the coast, the benefits of the ocean seem to stretch far beyond sand and sunsets.

Whether it’s cleaner air, gentler temperatures, or more movement and relaxation, the seaside may offer a real path to a longer, healthier life.

And if all you can manage is a few days at the shore, that may be enough to start making a difference.
