Is your favorite home store closing? Some locations are getting a second chance

If you love wandering through At Home for budget-friendly decor, furniture, or seasonal finds, the latest news may give you pause.

The national home goods chain has filed for bankruptcy and announced a wave of store closures.

But it’s not all bad news—two locations that were set to close have now been saved.

While most stores on the original list will still shut their doors by fall, shoppers in Wisconsin and New Jersey have reason to breathe a little easier.

Here’s what’s happening and what it means for your local store.

Two stores will remain open—for now

On June 16, At Home officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, citing rising interest rates, persistent inflation, and steep customs costs caused by tariffs.

The company announced it would close 26 “underperforming” locations by September 30.

But in a recent update, two of those closures have been canceled.

These two stores will remain open:

  • 3201 N. Mayfair Road, Wauwatosa, Wisconsin
  • 301 Nassau Park Boulevard, Princeton, New Jersey

If either is your local store, now’s a good time to stop by and show support—because while these locations are safe for now, nothing is guaranteed long-term.

Why is this happening?

In bankruptcy court filings, At Home pointed to a combination of challenges facing the retail industry.

These include higher borrowing costs, inflation cutting into household spending, and tariffs that have made importing goods more expensive.

“A number of the remaining stores are operating at sub-optimal performance levels,” the company shared in court documents.

As part of the restructuring, ownership of At Home will transfer to a group of hedge funds and investment firms based in New York City and San Francisco.

The company also noted that six stores had already closed in the past year prior to the current filing.

What this means for shoppers

If you shop at At Home regularly, now is the time to check your store’s status.

Those that are closing will likely offer markdowns and clearance pricing in the coming weeks.

Even if your store is safe for now, showing support with a visit or purchase can help it stick around longer.

Looking ahead, the brand could shift focus to online sales or adjust its business model.

The current shake-up may be the beginning of a new chapter—but what that looks like remains to be seen.
