Is your favorite local department store shutting down? 27 stores are closing and yours could be next!

The retail world is ever-changing, and even the most established brands must adapt to survive. This household name for many American shoppers has recently announced a significant change in its brick-and-mortar presence.

As we wave goodbye to the spring season, we'll also be bidding farewell to 27 Kohl's locations deemed “underperforming” by the company. Are you ready to say goodbye?

This decision, while difficult, is part of a broader strategy to ensure the long-term health and growth of the Wisconsin-based retailer.

Kohl's, which currently operates over 1,150 stores nationwide, is taking a hard look at its physical footprint and making tough choices to streamline operations.

Kohl's has been more than just a store; it's been a part of our community fabric. It's where we've shopped for family holidays, picked up essentials, and occasionally treated ourselves.

The announcement of these closures may hit close to home for some, affecting not just our shopping habits but also local employment.

Kohl's CEO Tom Kingsbury has expressed the gravity of these decisions, emphasizing the company's commitment to its customers and team members.

For those employees at the soon-to-be-closed stores, Kohl's is offering competitive severance packages or the opportunity to apply for other positions within the company.

The stores slated for closure span across 15 states, from the sunny avenues of California to the historic streets of Virginia. Here's a rundown of the locations where doors will be closing:

- Alabama: Spanish Fort
- Arkansas: Little Rock West
- California: Balboa/San Diego, Encinitas, Fremont, Mountain View, Napa, Pleasanton, Point West/Sacramento, San Rafael, San Luis Obispo, Westchester
- Colorado: Arapahoe Crossing/Aurora
- Georgia: Duluth
- Idaho: Boise
- Illinois: Plainfield, Spring Hill/West Dundee
- Massachusetts: Stoughton
- New Jersey: East Windsor
- Ohio: Blue Ash, Forest Park/Cincinnati
- Oregon: Portland Gateway
- Pennsylvania: Pottstown
- Texas: North Dallas
- Utah: Riverton
- Virginia: Herndon, Williamsburg

Beyond the store closures, Kohl's is also shutting down its San Bernardino E-commerce Fulfillment Center in California come May.

This move is part of the company's 2025 real estate strategy, which involves leveraging new technology and the ability to fulfill orders directly from stores, thus reducing the need for certain facilities.

Financially, these changes are not without consequence. Kohl's anticipates pre-tax charges of $60-80 million, primarily impacting the final quarter of 2024.

This comes in the wake of a reported 6% decrease in net sales over the first three quarters of 2024, compared to the previous year.

For those of us who frequent Kohl's, these closures may require a shift in how we shop. While the physical presence of some stores will be missed, Kohl's remains committed to serving its customers through remaining stores and its online platform.

The company's efforts to enhance efficiency and embrace technology suggest a continued dedication to providing value and convenience to shoppers.
