The Bittersweet Farewell to Familiar Booths​


In an unexpected move, Denny’s has revealed plans to shut down even more locations than originally anticipated.

While the company had already announced the closure of 150 restaurants, it now expects to close between 70 and 90 additional locations this year, bringing the total to nearly 180. With 88 closures already completed in 2024, this decision marks a significant shift in the brand’s presence nationwide.


The Impact of Time and Economy​


Denny’s currently operates about 1,300 locations, but the company has not yet specified which ones will be affected by these closures. Many of the restaurants on the chopping block have expiring leases or are located in areas that are no longer profitable.

Some of these diners have been serving customers for decades, making it difficult to modernize them to meet evolving business needs.


Denny’s isn’t the only restaurant chain facing these challenges.

Other familiar names like TGI Fridays, Applebee’s, and Red Lobster have also been forced to shut down hundreds of locations, with Red Lobster even filing for bankruptcy in May.

Why Are These Locations Closing?​


According to Denny’s Chief Financial Officer, Robert Verostek, changing consumer habits and shifting trade areas have played a role in the decision.

"Accelerating the closure of lower-volume restaurants will improve franchisee cash flow and allow them to reinvest into traffic-driving initiatives like our tested and proven remodel program," he explained.


Efforts to revamp existing locations have shown promise, with remodeled diners seeing a 6.5% increase in customer traffic over the past year.

However, only 23 locations have undergone renovations so far, raising questions about whether these updates can happen fast enough to offset the closures.

The Challenges of a Changing Dining Landscape​


The last few years have been tough for the restaurant industry, and Denny’s is no exception. Inflation and the rising cost of doing business have made it harder for many locations to stay profitable.

The lingering effects of the pandemic have also played a role—about a quarter of Denny’s 24-hour locations never returned to round-the-clock service, as shifting consumer habits and lower foot traffic made it unsustainable.


Verostek also pointed to "consumer uncertainty" as a key factor in the company’s recent struggles. Rising food prices continue to put pressure on both businesses and customers, with the latest inflation reports showing a 3% increase in consumer prices over the past year.

Some staple diner items, like eggs, have seen even steeper price hikes, making it more expensive for restaurants to maintain affordable menu options.

As Denny’s navigates these challenges, the company’s stock has taken a hit, with shares down nearly 25% following the announcement and a 50% drop over the past year.
