Keep seniors cool this summer: How you can help by donating a fan today

As the summer sun cranks up the heat, many reach for the thermostat or flip on the air conditioning without a second thought.

But for thousands of older adults in the community, staying cool isn’t so simple. Rising utility costs, fixed incomes, and homes without air conditioning can turn a sweltering day into a serious health hazard.

That’s why Senior Citizens, Inc. (SCI) is stepping up with their annual fan drive—and they need your help.

Why a Simple Fan Can Save Lives
It might seem like a small gesture, but a box fan can be a literal lifesaver for seniors. As we age, our bodies become less efficient at regulating temperature, making us more vulnerable to heat exhaustion, dehydration, and even life-threatening heatstroke.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), adults over 65 are at significantly higher risk during heat waves. For those living alone or on limited incomes, the danger is even greater.

Patti Lyons, President of Senior Citizens, Inc., puts it best, “Something as simple as a box fan can make a world of difference to an older adult trying to stay safe in the summer heat. This program reflects our ongoing mission to protect and uplift the most vulnerable members of our community.”

How You Can Make a Difference
SCI’s fan drive is a community-powered effort, and there are several easy ways you can get involved:

1. Donate a New Box Fan
Drop off a new, unused box fan at SCI headquarters: 3025 Bull Street, Savannah, GA. Every fan goes directly to a senior in need—no middleman, no red tape.

2. Make a Financial Contribution
Not near Savannah or unable to shop for a fan? No problem! You can make a secure financial donation online (just click here). SCI will use every dollar to purchase fans for distribution, ensuring your generosity has an immediate impact.

3. Spread the Word
Share this campaign with friends, family, and neighbors. The more people who know, the more seniors we can help. Consider organizing a mini-fan drive at your church, book club, or community center!

4. Request a Fan for Yourself or a Loved One
If you or someone you know could use a fan, don’t hesitate to reach out. Fans are available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. To check eligibility or reserve a fan, call 912-236-0363.

Why This Matters: The Hidden Dangers of Summer Heat
It’s easy to underestimate the risks of a hot day, but for seniors, the stakes are high. Heat-related illnesses can sneak up quickly, especially for those with chronic health conditions or limited mobility.

Symptoms like dizziness, confusion, rapid heartbeat, and nausea can escalate fast. A simple fan can help circulate air, lower body temperature, and provide much-needed relief.

But the benefits go beyond physical health. Knowing that someone cares enough to help can lift spirits and ease the isolation that many older adults feel, especially during the long, hot months.

SCI’s fan drive is more than just a summer campaign—it’s a tradition rooted in compassion and community spirit. Over the years, hundreds of fans have found their way into the homes of grateful seniors, thanks to the kindness of neighbors like you.

And the need is growing. With utility costs on the rise and more seniors choosing to age in place, the demand for fans is higher than ever.

Your donation, no matter how small, can make a world of difference.
