Kroger shares five rules for the ideal sandwich—here’s what you might want to tweak

Sometimes the simplest routines or everyday actions—the ones we repeat so often they become second nature—can unexpectedly end up being the very things that trip us up or lead us astray in subtle, surprising ways.

It’s incredibly easy to breeze past the small, ingrained habits we’ve built over time, especially when they appear completely harmless or seem like they’ve always just worked fine.

But every now and then, a gentle reminder or a slightly different way of looking at something can turn even the most familiar tasks into moments of unexpected clarity or quiet revelation.

In this case, the spotlight lands on something you’ve likely prepared or assembled more times than you can count—and yet, it turns out there’s a good chance you haven’t quite been doing it the way you thought you were.

When it comes to sandwiches, Kroger believes there’s a better way. Their five-step formula for the “perfect sandwich” aims to elevate what many treat as a routine meal.

According to Josh Harpole, Kroger’s Vice President of Deli and Bakery, “Every meal is an opportunity for creativity and enjoyment.” With a few smart choices, that everyday sandwich can turn into something memorable.

The first rule is all about the base: the bread. Kroger recommends branching out from standard white loaves to options like sourdough, ciabatta, baguettes, or whole grain.

These choices can bring more flavor and structure, especially if you’re loading up on hearty ingredients. Gluten-free shoppers also have more alternatives now than ever before.

Toasting your bread is an easy trick that helps avoid sogginess and adds satisfying crunch. It also creates a barrier that holds up better when condiments or juicy vegetables are involved.

If you’re packing lunch ahead of time, this small step can make a big difference. Think of it as the foundation of the entire build—worth doing right.

Rule two focuses on the protein, where variety makes all the difference. Kroger’s deli offers everything from turkey and ham to prosciutto, roast beef, and even meatless options for plant-based eaters.

Leftover grilled chicken, tuna salad, or deli meat combos can keep things interesting. “Whether your family loves classic combinations or adventurous flavors,” Harpole said, “Private Selection deli meats provide fresh high-quality ingredients.”

Keeping protein thinly sliced also helps each bite feel balanced. Whatever you pick, aim for contrast between savory, salty, or smoky flavors.

Cheese is the third layer, and Kroger suggests this is where you can really personalize your sandwich.

Choices range from mild cheddar to stronger varieties like brie or Gouda, depending on your preference. It also acts as a glue of sorts—holding everything together and adding richness. Want it melty? A quick broil does the trick.

For a softer bite, try spreadable cheeses like cream cheese or goat cheese. You can even mix in herbs or seasonings for more personality.

Cheese can also balance heat if you’re using spicy elements elsewhere in the sandwich. Just make sure it complements—not competes with—the rest of your ingredients.

Next comes the vegetables, where your sandwich can start to shine with color and crunch. Kroger recommends the standards—lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions—but also encourages mixing it up with things like shredded carrots, roasted peppers, or even thin apple slices.

This adds freshness and texture that lifts the whole sandwich. As always, dry your veggies before layering to avoid excess moisture.

Pickled veggies are another way to introduce flavor and zing. Think banana peppers, pickled red onions, or a few jalapeños for kick. If your sandwich needs brightness, this is where it should come from. Every crisp bite should bring contrast to the softness of your bread and fillings.

The fifth and final rule is all about condiments—and this is where many people go overboard. Kroger encourages creativity here too, suggesting more than just mayonnaise or mustard. Try Italian dressing, pesto, balsamic glaze, or even flavored hummus for something different. A little can go a long way, especially when layered carefully.

Kroger also offers same-day delivery through Instacart for convenience at home. Shoppers can get ingredients—or even sandwiches themselves—in as little as 30 minutes.

“Go enjoy your hoagie, sub, wrap, sandwich—whatever your perfect combo is,” Harpole said. New customers even get $15 off their first delivery of $75 or more.
