Measles cases surge: Know the US states reporting infections

As measles cases climb, health officials across the US are on high alert, monitoring outbreaks that continue to spread.

With multiple states now reporting infections, concerns about public health are growing.

Here at The GrayVine, we’re tracking the latest updates to keep you informed on the latest health updates. Keep reading to find out which states have reported cases so far.

According to health officials, at least six states have confirmed cases of measles so far this year, with Texas at the center of the largest outbreak.

While measles was previously considered eliminated in the US, recent trends show a concerning resurgence, particularly in areas with lower vaccination rates.

Texas: The Hardest-Hit State

Texas is experiencing the worst outbreak in the country, with over 120 cases reported.

Health officials have confirmed that the majority of those infected are unvaccinated children between ages five and 17.

The situation took a devastating turn when the first measles-related death in the US since 2015 was reported in the state.

The victim, a school-aged child, was hospitalized in Lubbock before passing away.

Concerns over further exposure have intensified after an infected individual traveled between San Marcos and San Antonio, potentially putting tens of thousands at risk, according to local health officials.

New Mexico: Rising case numbers

New Mexico has reported nine cases of measles, with infections centered in Lea County.

The county’s proximity to the Texas outbreak has raised concerns, but state officials have stated that there are no known links between the two outbreaks at this time.

New Jersey: Travel-related cases

New Jersey health officials have confirmed three cases of measles, all traced back to an unvaccinated child from Bergen County who had recently traveled abroad.

These individuals have been placed under quarantine to prevent further spread.

“The two secondary cases of measles that have been identified were individuals with close contact to the original measles case. The individuals have been under quarantine, minimizing any additional potential exposures. At this time, there are no additional cases,” the New Jersey health authorities stated.

Health officials have warned that anyone who visited Englewood Hospital Emergency Department in recent weeks may have been exposed and should contact their healthcare provider.

California: A risk of exposure at LAX

In California, one confirmed measles case involved an infant who was traveling through Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on February 19.

Authorities say that anyone who was at Tom Bradley Terminal between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. PST that day could have been exposed.

The affected passengers and individuals in specific seating areas on Korean Air flight KAL11/KE11 have been notified by their local health departments.

Georgia: Family cluster of cases

Georgia officials have reported three cases of measles in metro Atlanta, all within the same unvaccinated family.

These cases highlight the risks of household transmission, particularly in communities where vaccination rates are declining.

Alaska: First case of the year

Alaska’s first reported case of measles in 2025 was in an unvaccinated adult who had recently traveled overseas.

The individual, a Southern Kenai Peninsula resident, sought care upon returning and was immediately isolated at South Peninsula Hospital to prevent further spread.

“The person sought care and was immediately isolated upon arrival at the South Peninsula Hospital Emergency Department on January 13; clinical specimens were obtained for measles testing,” the state said.

Why are measles cases rising again?

Health officials point to declining vaccination rates as the primary reason measles is making a comeback.

While the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective in preventing infections, gaps in immunization coverage have created vulnerabilities in certain communities.

Measles is one of the most contagious viruses and can remain airborne for up to two hours, making it easy to spread in public spaces.

With the rapid increase in cases—especially those in affected states—individuals must check their vaccination status and take immediate precautions if exposed.
