Medical King has issued a recall for approximately 222,000 adult bed assistance rails.
This action comes after a tragic incident where a 66-year-old man lost his life due to entrapment and asphyxiation hazards associated with these products.
The recall involves three models of Medical King's portable bed rails: the “Bed Assist Rail with Adjustable Heights” (model numbers 7007 and 7057) and the “Bed Assist Rail Without Legs” (model number 7037).
The models were sold without brand-specific labeling, but they were available for purchase online from January 2020 to March 2024 on popular platforms such as Amazon, Walmart, and eBay.
The reported death occurred in November 2023 at a South Carolina residential care facility, where the victim became trapped between his mattress and the bed rail.
This incident has prompted Medical King to urge consumers to immediately stop using the recalled rails and to contact the company for a free repair kit or a replacement, depending on the model.
“Medical King cares greatly about the safety of its customers and their loved ones and was saddened by the report of a death associated with its product,” a spokesperson for the company said.
They noted that they “moved quickly” in issuing a recall after the company learned of his death.
Medical King has reportedly redesigned its new bed rails to comply with the latest federal safety requirements. To check if your bed rail is affected by the recall, they advise you to check your receipts or purchase history.
The company has also set up an online recall page where additional information can be found.
This recall is part of a larger issue concerning adult portable bed rails. Since 2021, the CPSC has issued nine recalls from various companies, with two additional product warnings.
These recalls and warnings have been linked to serious injuries and a total of 18 reported deaths.
The CPSC has established new mandatory safety standards for adult portable bed rails, along with safety tips for installation.
These include verifying that a bed rail is compatible with your mattress, ensuring there are no gaps that could pose an entrapment risk, and avoiding the use of multiple bed rails side by side.
