Memorial Day 2025 shopping alert: Which grocery chains are open, closed, or on limited hours

Holidays have a way of sneaking up, even when they’re marked on every calendar.

Whether you’re planning a barbecue, a pool party, or just need to restock the fridge, knowing where to shop can save serious time.

Memorial Day isn’t just a long weekend—it’s also one of the busiest grocery runs of the season.

Here’s what’s open, what’s closed, and how to plan your holiday haul.

Memorial Day 2025 falls on Monday, May 26, and most major grocery chains will remain open.

However, it’s important to note that banks and post offices will be closed due to the federal holiday.

The day itself honors fallen US service members and traces back to the 1860s when it was known as Decoration Day.

If you’re prepping for last-minute guests or forgot the buns, there’s still hope.

Walmart stores will be open on Memorial Day with regular hours, typically 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Target
stores will also stay open, but hours may vary by location, so check with your local branch.

Trader Joe’s, Publix, Whole Foods, and Meijer are open as well, although some pharmacy services may be closed.

Food Lion, H-E-B, and Harris Teeter will also be open for business as usual.

Costco, on the other hand, will be closed for the day, as is standard for several federal holidays.

Sam’s Club will operate with reduced hours, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for Plus members and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for Club members.

Aldi will also have limited hours, so shoppers are encouraged to use the store locator to check specifics.

While most stores are open, adjusted pharmacy schedules are common, especially at Albertsons-affiliated chains like Safeway, Vons, and Jewel-Osco.

Other stores remaining open include the Kroger family of stores, such as Ralphs, King Soopers, Fred Meyer, and Mariano’s.

Giant Eagle and Market District will operate under normal hours, with pharmacies open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Harveys Supermarkets
and Winn-Dixie locations, including their liquor stores, will also be open regular business hours.

So while you may hit a line or two, at least you won’t be stuck without grill essentials.

If you’re unsure about your local store’s hours, a quick online search or phone call can save you from a wasted trip.

Many chains offer holiday-specific updates via their store locator tools or apps.

And remember, if you're shopping on Memorial Day, expect crowds and limited staffing at certain locations.

Planning ahead could make the difference between a smooth party and a mid-grill panic.
