Millions of baked goods have been recalled—is your food safe?

Before you treat yourself to your go-to pastry shop, there’s an urgent warning you need to be aware of. Over 2 million baked products are being recalled due to potential listeria contamination. Here’s what you need to know!

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for approximately 2 million baked products, including various types of doughnuts, cinnamon sticks, French crullers, and fritters. These items, manufactured by FGF Brands, were distributed across the United States and Canada. According to the FDA report, the recall stems from the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious illness.

Initially announced on January 7, the recall was later upgraded to a Class II status. This classification, as per the FDA, indicates a situation where exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences, though the probability of serious harm is considered low.

The FDA has not provided specific next steps for consumers at this time, and FGF Brands has not yet responded to requests for comment. Concerned customers can reach the company via telephone at 905-761-3333 or through email at [email protected]. A complete list of recalled products is available on the FDA’s website.

Listeriosis, or listeria poisoning, is a serious foodborne illness caused by Listeria monocytogenes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is the third leading cause of death from foodborne diseases in the United States, affecting approximately 1,600 people annually and resulting in around 260 fatalities.

Symptoms of listeria infection include:
  • Fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Confusion
  • Loss of balance
  • Convulsions
  • Diarrhea and other gastrointestinal issues
Individuals at higher risk including pregnant women, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems, are advised to seek medical attention if they experience flu-like symptoms within two months of consuming potentially contaminated food.
