Nationwide delivery heist: Are your FedEx-shipped AT&T devices safe?

Smartphones are a vital part of daily life, but what if yours was stolen before it even reached your doorstep? Across the country, a theft ring is targeting FedEx deliveries of AT&T iPhones.

Are your devices safe, or could you be the next victim?

The recent spike in package thefts has law enforcement on high alert.

These aren't your run-of-the-mill porch pirates; these are organized criminal groups with a specific target: brand new iPhones shipped via FedEx to AT&T customers.

The thieves are using advanced tactics, including cellular data tracking, to pinpoint the delivery of these high-value items and intercept them before they reach the rightful owner.

"Criminal actors obtain cell phone tracking and delivery location information before the deliveries, providing competing organized theft groups the opportunity to intercept the delivery and steal cell phones from delivery personnel or consumers," explained by authorities.

In Northern Virginia alone, there have been at least 77 reported incidents of such thefts.

The New York Police Department is investigating at least 55 similar cases.

This pattern is replicated in various states, painting a picture of a nationwide crime wave that's not only alarming but also calls for a concerted effort from law enforcement agencies across the country.

These criminals are cunning, often disguising themselves as delivery personnel to avoid suspicion.

They've been seen carrying DoorDash bags and wearing Amazon or construction vests, blending in with legitimate couriers.

Their timing is impeccable, striking just moments after packages are left on doorsteps, leaving little to no window for homeowners to react.

In Chicago, a duo's brazen acts were caught on camera, with a woman dancing on a walkway before snatching a package and fleeing to a waiting car.

In another instance, a man was filmed grabbing multiple packages in broad daylight.

These incidents are not only distressing for the victims but also pose a significant challenge for investigators trying to crack the criminals' modus operandi.

Both AT&T and FedEx have acknowledged the issue and are working closely with law enforcement to safeguard deliveries.

FedEx emphasizes its rigorous safety and security programs and frequently reminds team members about the importance of package safety.

But what can you, as a consumer, do to protect your deliveries? Here are some tips to consider:

1. Track Your Shipments
Use tracking services provided by FedEx to keep an eye on your package's journey. Sign up for delivery notifications to be alerted as soon as your package arrives.

2. Delivery Instructions
If possible, provide specific delivery instructions. Request that packages be placed in a less visible area or require a signature upon delivery.

3. Alternative Delivery Locations
Consider having your packages delivered to a secure location, such as a FedEx Office or a trusted neighbor who is home during the day.

4. Security Cameras
Install home security cameras to monitor your front door and deter thieves. Visible cameras can be a strong deterrent to potential porch pirates.

5. Insurance
Ensure that your high-value items are insured in case of theft. This can provide some financial relief if your package is stolen.

6. Community Vigilance
Stay connected with your neighbors and community. A neighborhood watch program can be an effective way to keep an eye out for suspicious activity.
