NBA player and Beach Boys brother Stan Love dies at 76—what fans are remembering most

A former basketball star's inspiring journey comes to a close, leaving behind a legacy of love.

Fans and family alike mourn the loss of a figure who touched two very different worlds.

The worlds of sports and music are mourning a profound loss.

Stan Love, former NBA player and brother of The Beach Boys singer Mike Love, has died at the age of 76.

The heartbreaking news was shared by his son, NBA player Kevin Love, in a deeply emotional post.

Born in Los Angeles in 1949, Stan Love made his mark not with a microphone, but with a basketball.

While his brother, Mike Love, was making waves with The Beach Boys, Stan was crafting his own legacy at the University of Oregon.

His athletic prowess earned him a top-10 selection in the 1971 NBA Draft, where he joined the Baltimore Bullets alongside some of the greatest names of his generation.

Stan’s professional career included stints with the Bullets, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the San Antonio Spurs of the ABA.

Over four seasons, he averaged 6.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, becoming known for his work ethic and quiet resilience on the court—traits that would come to define his life off the hardwood as well.

The Love family name resonates across two American pastimes: sports and music.

Mike Love’s success with The Beach Boys defined a generation, while Stan forged a different but equally impactful path.

That legacy continued with Stan’s son, NBA champion Kevin Love, who currently plays for the Miami Heat.

Kevin, who had recently stepped away from the team for personal reasons, confirmed the heartbreaking news in an emotional Instagram post.

"Dad, I'm so proud to be your son," he wrote, reflecting on his father’s long and courageous battle over the past months, and especially the final, difficult weeks.

While no official cause of death has been released, Kevin’s words painted a vivid picture of Stan’s struggle—a fight marked by strength, pain, and the enduring love of family.

As Kevin continues to grieve, he has been ruled out for Game 4 of the Miami Heat’s playoff series, with teammates and fans rallying around him in support.
