Nowhere to go but down: Beat the 2025 price surge with this money-saving strategy!

As we sail through 2025, the winds of economic change are blowing harder than ever, and they're hitting us right where it hurts–our grocery bills.

For many Americans over 60, managing a budget is more than just penny-pinching–it's a necessary strategy for maintaining a comfortable lifestyle.

So, when the cost of kitchen staples climbs higher than a kite on a windy day, it's time to get crafty with our shopping habits.

Although inflation has been a significant factor in rising grocery prices in recent years, the situation worsened after 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian imports took effect on March 4.

Experts and major retailers caution that these new levies will likely drive up the cost of everyday essentials, particularly imported food products.

Experts are sounding the alarm bells, predicting that the price of five grocery must-haves is set to skyrocket.

We're talking about the very fabric of our culinary creations–fresh produce like strawberries and avocados, the comforting embrace of bread and pasta, and even the simple pleasure of a cold beer or a sip of tequila.

According to a survey by AlixPartners, a whopping 75% of consumers are bracing for impact, planning to adjust their shopping sails in the coming months. But fear not because there's a ray of hope on the horizon.

The secret weapon in our money-saving arsenal? Store brands. Yes, those humble heroes sitting quietly on the shelves, waiting to save us a bundle. A significant 46% of shoppers are turning to these wallet-friendly warriors, and for good reason.

Retail gurus like Dominick Miserandino have been championing store brands for ages. He said that they are “often just as good” as name brands and usually contain the same ingredients.

"Switching to store brands is an easy way to lower your grocery bill without compromising on quality," Miserandino told The US Sun.

Let's take a quick tour of the store brand hall of fame:

Walmart
  • Great Value
  • Bettergoods
  • Sam’s Choice
  • Equate
  • Mainstays
Target
  • Dealworthy
  • Wild Fable
  • Room Essentials
  • Threshold
  • Good & Gather
ALDI
  • Clancy’s
  • Milville
  • Mama Cozzi’s
  • Little Salad Bar
  • Sundae Shoppe

Mitchell Olsen, another retail expert, points out that these store brands are now a force to be reckoned with.

He noted that while store brands have been "as old as retailing itself," their popularity has been rising as companies invest more resources into them.

"Instead of mimicking a leading national brand, they are creating their own premium store brands that offer shoppers something unique and of relatively high quality," he advised.

"Compared to generic private labels, premium store brands provide retailers with greater levels of differentiation, profitability, and shopper loyalty."

Costco’s Kirkland Signature and Walmart’s Great Value are just a few examples of store brands that have gained increasing relevance in recent years.

Beyond opting for store brands over pricier name brands, consumers can cut grocery costs by creating a shopping list and sticking to it, Miserandino shared.

"The key is to avoid getting distracted by impulse buys that can quickly add up," he advised.

The retail expert also highlighted that shoppers can save significantly by buying in bulk at warehouse clubs like Costco and Sam’s Club, stocking up on non-perishables when they go on sale, and using digital coupons and store apps to unlock additional savings.

As experts warn of rising grocery prices due to tariffs on Mexico and Canada, consumers are looking for ways to stretch their budgets and cut costs.

One key item expected to see a price hike is strawberries, as Mexico is a major supplier of the fruit to the US. In 2022, Mexico accounted for about 85% of all strawberries imported into the country, according to USDA data.

Another staple that could become more expensive under Trump’s tariffs is avocados, with Mexico supplying roughly 90% of the avocados consumed in the US.

Beyond embracing store brands, there are other strategies to keep your grocery bills in check:

  • Make a shopping list and stick to it like glue to avoid the siren call of impulse buys.
  • Buy in bulk at warehouse clubs for non-perishables – think Costco and Sam's Club.
  • Stock up during sales and unleash the power of digital coupons and store apps.
Major retailers are already voicing their concerns. The CEO of Target has hinted at stormy weather ahead for prices, urging shoppers to brace themselves. Best Buy is also warning consumers of the upcoming tick in prices.

Publix is the pleasant shopping experience. I always look for the BOGO at publix otherwise I can't afford them.
