1921: US Ended Its Involvement in World War I
President Warren G. Harding signed a joint resolution of Congress formally ending the United States’ involvement in World War I. Because the Senate had refused to ratify the Treaty of Versailles, this resolution served as America’s independent declaration of peace with Germany.

1926: Army Air Corps Established
The United States Army Air Corps was created as a separate branch within the U.S. Army, a key step toward the future establishment of the Air Force. On the same day, Congress authorized the Distinguished Flying Cross to recognize heroism or extraordinary achievement during aerial flight.

1937: Amelia Earhart Vanished
Famed aviator Amelia Earhart disappeared over the Pacific Ocean while attempting to circumnavigate the globe. She and navigator Fred Noonan were last seen departing from Lae, New Guinea—sparking one of aviation’s greatest unsolved mysteries.

1962: First Walmart Store Opened
Sam Walton opened the first Wal-Mart Discount City in Rogers, Arkansas. The modest store would mark the beginning of what became the largest retail chain in the United States—and a global retail powerhouse.

1964: Civil Rights Act Signed into Law
President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, landmark legislation that outlawed segregation and prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. It marked a defining moment in the civil rights movement.

1973: Conway Twitty's Hit Released
Country star Conway Twitty released “You’ve Never Been This Far Before.” The sultry single became a chart-topping success and was later named Billboard’s Country Song of the Year for 1973.

1979: Susan B. Anthony Dollar Issued
