1885: President Ulysses S. Grant Passed Away
The Civil War general and 18th President of the United States died at age 63 after a battle with throat cancer. His leadership helped preserve the Union—and his memoirs, completed just before his death, are considered a literary classic.

1967: The Detroit Riot Erupted After a Police Raid
Violence broke out after a police raid on an unlicensed bar in Detroit’s Black community. The unrest lasted five days, resulting in 43 deaths and thousands of arrests. It became a defining moment in the civil rights era and a flashpoint for the growing Black Power movement.

1973: President Nixon Refused to Release Watergate Tapes
In a dramatic turn during the Watergate scandal, President Richard Nixon defied a subpoena and refused to turn over tape recordings from the Oval Office. The move intensified calls for accountability and ultimately led to his resignation the following year.

1996: US Women’s Gymnastics Team Struck Gold
