1948: Idlewild Airport Dedicated
President Harry S. Truman formally dedicated New York’s Idlewild Airport as New York International Airport. It would later be renamed John F. Kennedy International Airport in honor of the fallen president in 1963.
1964: First Close-Ups of the Moon Captured
NASA’s unmanned Ranger 7 spacecraft transmitted the first close-up images of the Moon’s surface, paving the way for the Apollo missions that would follow later in the decade.
