On This Day - June 19

Ready to take a trip down memory lane? Let's look back at some of the most significant events in America and beyond that happened on this day, starting with...

1846 – Baseball’s First Official Game

In Hoboken, New Jersey, the first officially recognized baseball game under the Cartwright Rules was played. The New York Nine trounced the Knickerbockers 23–1. Though baseball had been evolving for decades, this match is considered the sport's formal birth, laying the groundwork for America’s pastime.

1862 – Slavery Outlawed in US Territories

Congress took a significant step toward abolition by outlawing slavery in all US territories. While not yet a national ban, this legislation helped shift the nation’s legal foundation in the midst of the Civil War and signaled growing federal opposition to the institution of slavery.

1865 – The First Juneteenth

Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people were free—two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The day became known as Juneteenth, now celebrated across the US as the symbolic end of slavery and a moment of long-delayed liberation.

1978 – Garfield’s First Grumpy Stare

The world met the lasagna-loving, Monday-hating orange tabby for the first time as Garfield, created by Jim Davis, debuted in 41 newspapers. Decades later, the sardonic cat remains one of the most widely syndicated comic strips in history—and an enduring pop culture icon.

1992 – Batman Returns Hits Theaters

Tim Burton’s Batman Returns premiered, with Michael Keaton reprising his role as the Dark Knight. The film featured darkly magnetic performances by Danny DeVito as the Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer’s unforgettable turn as Catwoman. Moody, gothic, and stylishly twisted, the film cemented Burton’s legacy in superhero cinema.
