1775: Founding of the US Marine Corps
The United States Marine Corps was established by a directive from the Continental Congress to raise two battalions of Marines for the American Revolutionary War.

1885: The First Motorcycle Journey
The world's first motorcycle, the wooden-framed "Reitwagen", completed its inaugural long-distance test run, piloted by the teenage son of its German inventor, Gottlieb Daimler.

1898: The Wilmington Massacre and Coup
A multiracial city government in Wilmington, North Carolina, was violently overthrown by white supremacists in a premeditated attack that killed as many as 60 Black Americans, marking the bloody climax of a organized political campaign.

1903: Invention of the Windshield Wiper
Mary Anderson of Birmingham, Alabama, was granted a US patent for her "window cleaning device", the original invention that would later become the modern windshield wiper.

1958: Donation of the Hope Diamond
The famed Hope Diamond, one of the world's largest blue diamonds, was donated to the Smithsonian Institution, where it quickly became one of the museum's biggest public attractions.

1969: Debut of Sesame Street
The landmark children's television program Sesame Street, featuring a beloved cast of puppet characters like Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, premiered on National Educational Television.

1975: Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald
The American freighter Edmund Fitzgerald sank with all 29 crew members during a storm on Lake Superior, a tragic and mysterious loss immortalized in song and cemented as the most famous shipwreck in the Great Lakes.

1990: Premiere of Home Alone
The blockbuster comedy film Home Alone, written by John Hughes and starring Macaulay Culkin, premiered, launching a successful franchise and becoming a perennial holiday classic.
