1776: Benjamin Franklin’s Rebel Role Announced
An English newspaper reported that Benjamin Franklin had officially joined the American rebellion, marking a significant—and very public—shift in the fight for independence.

1832: New York’s First Mass Transit Launched
New York City debuted its first mass transit system: a horse-drawn streetcar running along the Bowery, ushering in a new era of urban transportation.

1851: Moby-Dick Published in the US
Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick was published by Harper & Brothers, introducing American readers to Captain Ahab’s legendary pursuit of the white whale.

1889: Nellie Bly Began Her Around-the-World Journey
Reporter Nellie Bly set off to beat the fictional 80-day trip of Jules Verne’s Phileas Fogg. She succeeded, completing the journey in just over 72 days.

1941: Suspicion Premiered
Alfred Hitchcock’s romantic thriller Suspicion, starring Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine, made its debut and later earned Fontaine an Academy Award.

1960: Ruby Bridges Integrated New Orleans School
Six-year-old Ruby Bridges attended an all-white elementary school in New Orleans, becoming the youngest Black student to help integrate public schools in the American South.

1960: “Georgia On My Mind” Hit No. 1
Ray Charles’s soulful rendition of “Georgia On My Mind” reached No. 1 on the charts, becoming one of his most iconic recordings.

1969: Apollo 12 Launched Toward the Moon
Apollo 12, the second crewed mission to land on the moon, lifted off from Cape Canaveral with astronauts Charles Conrad Jr., Richard F. Gordon Jr., and Alan L. Bean.

2016: Moana Premiered in Los Angeles
Disney’s animated film Moana, directed by Ron Clements and John Musker and featuring the voices of Auli‘i Cravalho and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, premiered in Los Angeles.
