Authentic Irish coffee is not as simple as spiking coffee with a shot of whiskey. Instead, this recipe is a carefully constructed coffee drink that should be mixed with care.

- 2 teaspoons packed brown sugar, to taste
- 4 ounces strong, hot coffee
- 1 1/2 ounces Irish whiskey
- 1 ounce heavy cream, lightly whipped
- Gather the ingredients.
- Place 2 teaspoons of packed brown sugar into a warm Irish coffee glass, mug, or other heatproof glass.
- Add 4 ounces of strong, hot coffee and 1 1/2 ounces of Irish whiskey.
- Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
- Float 1 ounce lightly whipped heavy cream on top by slowly pouring it over the back of a spoon.
- Do not stir. Instead, drink the Irish coffee through the cream.
