Popular Costco drink faces recall after bottle safety concerns—check if yours is affected

Many shoppers turn to Costco for quality and value, but one popular product is being pulled from shelves for safety reasons.

A recall has been issued for a well-known sparkling wine after reports that some bottles could shatter without warning.

The issue isn’t linked to handling or storage—it’s tied to a manufacturing defect that may cause dangerous pressure inside the bottle.

Customers in several states are being urged to check their purchases and take action if they have the affected product.

Here’s what you need to know to stay safe and protect your household.

What product is being recalled?

The recall involves Kirkland Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene, a sparkling wine sold at Costco between April 25 and August 26, 2025.

Certain bottles, identified by item number 1879870, may be at risk of shattering even when sitting unopened on a shelf or counter.

The cause is believed to be a flaw during production, which resulted in excess pressure inside some bottles.

While rare, these types of defects can make a sealed bottle unstable and unsafe to keep at home.

Where was it sold?

This recall applies to bottles sold in several Midwest and Great Plains states, including:

  • Iowa
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • North Dakota
  • Nebraska
  • Ohio
  • South Dakota
  • Wisconsin

If you live in one of these states and purchased Prosecco at Costco during the affected dates, it’s best to double-check your stock.

What should you do if you have it?

If you find a recalled bottle in your home, don’t try to open or finish it. Costco recommends that customers dispose of the wine immediately to avoid injury.

The safest method is:

  1. Wrap the bottle in paper towels.
  2. Place it inside a plastic bag.
  3. Carefully place it in your household trash—not your recycling bin.

Customers who received a recall notice are eligible for a refund without having to return the bottle.

This ensures no one has to transport a potentially dangerous product back to the store.

Why do bottles sometimes shatter?

Sparkling wines are bottled under high pressure to maintain carbonation.

If the glass is flawed or the bottling process is faulty, that pressure can exceed what the bottle can handle.

The result may be spontaneous breakage, even if the bottle is untouched.

Although rare, recalls are taken seriously to prevent injuries and protect consumers.

Other recent Costco recalls

This isn’t the only product recall Costco shoppers should be aware of.

The Rolling Pin Baking Company recently recalled its Dubai Style Chocolate squares, also sold in select Costco stores between May 1 and August 29, 2025, due to incorrect allergen labeling.

Customers with food allergies were advised to check their purchases to avoid health risks.
