Yes I think so. When most folks graduating from High School were off to college I chose instead to enlist in the Air Force. I heard back from my future sister-in-law that classmates had trouble believing that would be my decision. They thought I would go to college and get a degree in music. They were certainly incorrect about that! Both surprised and disappointed in me. It turned out to be the best thing I ever did. Next to marrying in 1972!
