Recall alert: Something’s not right with this popular dairy product

When it comes to the food we eat, safety is paramount.

That's why the recent announcement from the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has caused a stir among consumers, especially those residing in seven specific states.

The recall involves a popular dairy product that may have made its way into your fridge without you even realizing it.

The FDA has issued a recall of 189 cases, which translates to a substantial 1,701 pounds of Cabot Creamery butter.

The reason? An unsettling discovery of elevated levels of coliform bacteria in the product.

Cabot's Extra Creamy Premium Butter, produced by Agri-Mark Inc. in Westfield, Vermont, was first pulled from shelves on March 26, with the FDA later categorizing it as a Class III recall on April 8.

While a Class III recall might sound alarming, it's defined as a situation 'not likely to cause adverse health consequences' if the product is consumed. But that doesn't mean you should take this lightly.

The recalled butter has made its way to retailers in Arkansas, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont.

If you're a resident of one of these states, or if you've recently purchased butter while visiting, it's time to check your fridge. Here's what you need to look for:
  • Product Name: Cabot Creamery 8-ounce Extra Creamy Premium Butter, Sea Salted
  • Packaging: Cardboard package containing two 4-ounce sticks
  • UPC: 0 78354 62038 0
  • Lot Number: 090925-055
  • Item Number: 2038
  • “Best By” Date: Sept. 9, 2025

If your butter matches these details, it's part of the recall due to the presence of high levels of coliform bacteria.

Coliform bacteria are commonly found in the environment, including soil, plants, and the intestinal tracts of humans and animals.

They're also a frequent culprit in water contamination issues in places like Vermont.

While the presence of coliform bacteria doesn't necessarily mean you'll get sick, it can indicate that other, more harmful bacteria, such as E. coli, might be present.

The Vermont Department of Health emphasizes that while the specific batch of Cabot Creamery's butter in question has not been found to contain E. coli, only elevated levels of coliform, it's better to err on the side of caution.

If you find that you have the recalled butter, do not consume it. Instead, you have a couple of options:

1. Dispose of the butter safely, ensuring that no one else will consume it.
2. Return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or a replacement product.

It's important to take recalls seriously, even when they're classified as not likely to cause health issues. The recall is a preventive measure to protect consumers from potential risks.
