Recall notice for a favorite cereal—did you buy the affected batch?

Is your morning routine at risk? If Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds is a staple in your breakfast lineup, there’s an important update you’ll want to know about.

A significant nationwide recall has been announced for thousands of boxes due to a potentially dangerous contamination issue.

The problem isn't something visible or immediately noticeable—it involves the unexpected presence of metal fragments.

Post Consumer Brands has issued a recall for more than 5,000 boxes of Honey Bunches of Oats with Almonds due to a serious safety concern.

The issue? Potential contamination with metal fragments. The affected cereal was packaged in 48-ounce boxes containing two sealed bags and was distributed to retail stores in both California and Colorado.

The affected boxes are marked with UPC: 8 84912-01428 3. The "Best if used by" dates to look out for are APR0926 RCA and APR1026 RCA.

According to Post, “no product reached store shelves.” Still, the recall is being made public out of what they described as an abundance of caution.

The US Food and Drug Administration classified the recall as Class II. That means eating the cereal could result in “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.”

While no injuries have been reported so far, consuming metal fragments poses a real risk. Mouth injuries, digestive issues, or complications with dental work are all possible.

Even though the cereal supposedly never reached consumers, it’s smart to check your pantry. If you live in California or Colorado and bought a large box recently, verify the UPC and best-by date.

If you find a match, don’t eat the cereal. Throw it out or return it to the store where it was purchased.

If you have concerns, Post Consumer Brands encourages you to get in touch. Their customer service line is 1-800-431-7678 and is available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, excluding holidays.

You can also contact them through their online form. No further instructions were issued because no boxes were believed to have been sold.

Recalls like this are not always due to spoilage or bacteria. Sometimes, foreign materials like metal or plastic make their way into food during production.

Even with strict quality controls, issues can occur. That’s why prompt recalls are a necessary part of food safety protocols.
