Remembering Charley Scalies: TV fans mourn the loss of "The Wire" and "Sopranos’" actor

For many who watched the golden age of television dramas, his face was instantly familiar.

Charley Scalies, the seasoned actor known for his roles in The Wire and The Sopranos, has passed away at the age of 84.

While he wasn’t always in the spotlight, his grounded performances left a lasting mark on viewers who appreciated the depth and humanity he brought to every role.

Scalies’ path to acting wasn’t a typical one.

Born in Pennsylvania, he didn’t start his professional acting career until the 1990s.

Before then, he led a full life—raising a family, working outside the entertainment world, and gaining the real-life perspective that would later inform his powerful screen presence.

His daughter, Anne Marie, shared that he passed away peacefully in a nursing home in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

He is survived by his wife, three children, and several grandchildren who remember him not only as an actor but as a warm, funny, and devoted family man.

Memorable as "Horseface" on The Wire

Scalies is best known for playing Thomas “Horseface” Pakusa, a longshoreman and union member in season two of The Wire.

The character stood at the heart of the show’s look at blue-collar struggles, shifting industries, and loyalty among working families in Baltimore.

Appearing in all 12 episodes of the 2003 season, Scalies delivered a quiet but powerful performance.

His portrayal gave depth to a man caught between changing times and old loyalties—a character many viewers saw as symbolic of a vanishing way of life.

A short but strong role in The Sopranos

Scalies also made an appearance in season five of The Sopranos, playing Tony Soprano’s high school football coach in a dream sequence.

Though brief, the role offered a rare moment of moral reflection for Tony—and Scalies’ gruff delivery made it especially memorable.

His ability to bring nuance and presence, even in smaller roles, was one of his strengths.

He wasn’t the type of actor who chased fame—but he was the kind who made every scene better.
