Seafood lovers, beware: Over 44,000 pounds pulled in FDA recall over listeria risk

If you’re a seafood lover who keeps a stash in the freezer for quick weeknight dinners or festive gatherings, it’s time to hit pause and check your supply.

The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has just announced a major recall.

More than 44,000 pounds of seafood products have been pulled from shelves due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes—a bacteria that can pose serious health risks, especially for older adults.

Let’s break down what’s happening, how to spot the recalled seafood, and what you should do next to keep your kitchen—and your health—safe.

What’s the Scoop on the Seafood Recall?

Bornstein Seafoods, a well-known seafood supplier based in Bellingham, Washington, is at the center of this recall.

During routine quality testing, the company discovered that a sample of their cooked and peeled, ready-to-eat coldwater shrimp meat tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

As a result, they’ve halted all distribution of the affected products while they investigate further.

The recall covers a whopping 44,550 pounds of frozen shrimp, which were distributed to retailers and distributors in California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia, Canada.

However, the FDA warns that these products may have made their way to other states as well, so it’s wise for everyone to check their freezers—no matter where you live.

Why Is Listeria So Dangerous—Especially for Older Adults?

Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that can cause a serious infection called listeriosis.

While healthy adults may experience only mild symptoms (or none at all), the stakes are much higher for certain groups—including people over 60, pregnant women, newborns, and anyone with a weakened immune system.

Symptoms of listeriosis can include:
  • High fever
  • Severe headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
In severe cases, listeriosis can lead to hospitalization, miscarriage, stillbirth, or even death.

The infection is particularly dangerous because it can take days or even weeks for symptoms to appear after eating contaminated food, making it tricky to trace.

At this time, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall. However, if you’ve already eaten the shrimp, keep an eye out for symptoms of listeriosis—especially if you’re in a higher-risk group.

If you develop symptoms, contact your healthcare provider right away and let them know about your possible exposure.
