In a world where we entrust the care of our most vulnerable to healthcare professionals, it's deeply unsettling to encounter a breach of that sacred trust.
For readers of The GrayVine, who may have loved ones in need of in-home care, a recent incident in Georgia serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the potential dark side of caregiving.
In Loganville, Georgia, a community about 35 miles northeast of Atlanta, a healthcare worker has been charged with a serious felony after a video surfaced online showing her engaging in behavior that has shocked and disturbed many.
The worker, 19-year-old Lucrecia Kormassa Koiyan, was arrested on charges of exploitation of a disabled person.
The video in question, which has been reviewed by reporters but not linked out of respect for the victim, depicts Koiyan dancing provocatively over a disabled patient while wearing her navy scrubs and a stethoscope.
The patient is seated in a chair while Koiyan stands above him on the same chair, recording her dance through a mirror with her phone.
The Loganville Police Department was alerted to the video on January 23, and Chief M.D. Lowry expressed his revulsion at the content.
“Disgusted is the only word I know,” he told USA TODAY.
"I was appalled and disgusted that anyone would create such a video featuring a disabled person," Lowry expressed. "As police officers, our highest duty is to protect those who cannot protect themselves, and my detectives worked as swiftly as possible to bring charges in this incident."
Following the investigation, Koiyan was arrested and booked into the Walton County Jail. She was later released on a $7,500 bond.
As the investigation continues, the police are examining a second video that has come to light, showing Koiyan engaging in similar behavior over another individual who appears to be disabled.
This ongoing investigation could lead to additional charges, depending on the findings and the jurisdiction where the second incident occurred.
The community and the nation are left grappling with the implications of such actions by someone tasked with the care of those who are unable to care for themselves.
The healthcare worker's first court appearance and legal representation details are pending.
