The incident unfolds

It was just another morning at George Bush Intercontinental Airport on February 2, 2025, as United Airlines Flight 1382 was preparing for its trip to LaGuardia Airport in New York City.

The passengers were all settled, anticipating the usual takeoff. But instead of the familiar hum of the engines and the ascent into the sky, something went wrong. An engine issue halted the entire flight, setting off a sequence of events no one expected.


A passenger captured the frightening moment on video, showing what appeared to be flames surrounding the aircraft.

As the tension built in the cabin, a flight attendant urged passengers to remain calm and stay seated, but the urgency was clear as a fellow traveler shouted, "No, it’s on fire!"


Evacuation and response

Thanks to the expertise of the crew, the situation didn’t escalate further. They quickly aborted the takeoff and began evacuating everyone onboard.

The 104 passengers and five crew members safely deplaned using both emergency slides and stairs. They made their way onto the tarmac, where buses were waiting to take them back to the terminal.


United Airlines later confirmed that the issue was a malfunction with one of the engines, leading to the decision to abort the flight. Another plane was arranged to carry the passengers, though they faced a delay.

The Houston Fire Department was called to the scene, but upon their arrival, they reported that there was no fire. The fire department clarified that the video circulating on social media didn’t match what they found when they arrived, leaving many questions about the situation.
