Shoppers get 10% off groceries as Walmart joins Target and Whole Foods in new perk

Retailers are constantly looking for new ways to keep workers engaged, and one major chain has just made a significant move.

The change directly affects a daily necessity for millions of employees, making it one of the most impactful benefits in years.

Workers began to notice the difference before any official announcement, sparking widespread discussion online. Now, the nation’s largest retailer has confirmed the update, and it is available to use immediately.

Walmart has expanded its 10% employee discount to cover nearly all groceries both in-store and online.

This is a major change from the previous policy, which only included fresh produce and general items year-round while excluding meat, milk, pasta, and frozen pizza except during the holiday season.

According to the company, the adjustment is part of its strategy to recruit and retain workers in a competitive retail environment.

Rising grocery costs from inflation and tariff pressures have made this expansion more valuable than ever.

Some employees noticed the new perk as early as Sunday, with reports on social media showing discounts applied to lunch purchases and even beer.

Walmart US Chief Executive John Furner confirmed the change during a managers’ meeting in Houston, where it reportedly received a standing ovation.

“The associate pantry means everything to them because they don’t know how they are going to be paying their next meal, and now this is going to help,” a Miami-area store manager said in a video viewed by WSJ.

The company highlighted that the benefit has long been one of the most requested by staff.

The move brings Walmart in line with major competitors offering grocery-related perks.

Target employees receive 20% off fresh and frozen produce, while Whole Foods staff get 20% off most in-store purchases.

Amazon extends a 10% grocery discount up to $100 annually for warehouse and hourly workers.

Walmart is also introducing additional incentives, including higher wages for managers and potential bonuses for hourly employees.

Not all reactions have been positive, with some saying deeper systemic changes are needed.

One person wrote online, “Imagine if employers were more focused on providing livable wages so people could afford groceries and other necessities instead of discounts for the products they sell?”

Critics argue that while discounts help in the short term, higher pay would create lasting financial stability.

Still, for many employees, a broader discount on groceries offers immediate and tangible relief.
