Spice recall alert: What you need to know about the latest FDA warning

Spices are a kitchen essential, adding flavor to our favorite dishes. But what happens when they become a source of danger instead of delight?

A new recall is making waves, and it's time to check your spice rack for potential risks.

Curio Spice Co., a company that prides itself on ethically sourced and sustainably produced spices, has issued a nationwide recall of its Korerima “Grains of Paradise” spice.

The recall is due to a potential mold contamination that could pose health risks, especially to those with certain allergies or weakened immune systems.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified this recall as Class II.

A Class II recall indicates that exposure to the violative product may lead to temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.

The probability of serious adverse effects is considered remote, but it's not a risk worth taking.

The affected product is sold in glass jars labeled “Ethiopian Korerima.”

This spice, akin to green cardamom, is a versatile ingredient often used in coffee, citrus fruits, or stews. It's sourced directly from a women's farming cooperative in Bonga, Ethiopia.

However, specific batches with particular lot numbers and expiration dates are now under scrutiny.

These details are available below and on the FDA's website and should be cross-referenced with any jars you may have at home.
  • Curio Spice Co. brand Grains of Paradise (Korerima)
  • Jar 1.25 oz net wt.
  • UPC: 672975171032
  • Batch number: PKRRM02202024
  • Better BY: 02/20/2027
The recall spans nearly every state, with only Arkansas, Kansas, West Virginia, and Wyoming being exceptions.

Mold contamination in food products is not to be taken lightly.

For individuals with weakened immune systems, asthma, or mold allergies, consuming moldy spices can be particularly hazardous.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) warns that inhaling mold spores can trigger allergic reactions, including rhinitis, nasal congestion, postnasal drip, sneezing, and even severe conditions like allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis.

Symptoms to watch out for include:
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Postnasal drip
  • Sneezing
  • Itchiness in the nose, eyes, ears, or mouth
  • Red and watery eyes
  • Swelling around the eyes
If you experience worsening symptoms in damp or moldy environments, it could be indicative of a mold allergy.

If you find the recalled Korerima spice in your collection, stop using it immediately.

You have the option to discard it or return it to the point of purchase for a full refund.

If you have any questions about the recall, you can reach out to Curio Spice Co.'s customer support team via email at [email protected] or by phone at 617-945-1888.
