Then, in a twist that seemed straight out of a slapstick comedy, Stiller began to ascend to the stage via an elevator platform—only for it to malfunction halfway.
The crowd erupted into laughter as Stiller, ever the professional, maintained a stony-faced expression, his upper body awkwardly suspended above the stage.
The Tropic Thunder star, at 59, proved that his comedic timing was as sharp as ever. With the audience in stitches, he quipped about the category he was presenting—production design—highlighting the irony of his own precarious situation.
“It is a field where the slightest miscalculation can lose the trust of the audience and humiliate the performers onscreen,” he said with a straight face.
Despite the technical hiccup, Stiller managed to clamber out of the elevator and onto the stage, albeit with a stumble that only added to the humor of the situation. All the while, he was working his way through his speech.
Once he regained his composure and found his mark, he presented the Oscar for best production design to Nathan Crowley and Lee Sandales for their work on Wicked.
The 2025 Oscars are hosted by Conan O’Brien, a cherished former late-night host, a first-time master of ceremony for this prestigious awards night. After the was announced to fulfill the role, he joked, “I only agreed to host so that I could get invited.”
The mishap was a memorable moment in an evening filled with highlights, including the leading 13 nominations for Emilia Pérez, a Spanish-language musical powerhouse starring Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldana, and Karla Sofia Gascon.

Wicked tied with The Brutalist for 10 nods, among which were best picture, best actress for Cynthia Erivo and best supporting actress for Ariana Grande.
Other best picture nominees included A Complete Unknown, the Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothee Chalamet–who was also in the running for best actor.
The best picture category was a tight race, with Dune: Part Two, drama film about the election of a new pope Conclave, and the Brazilian political drama I'm Still Here also in contention.
The acting categories were equally competitive. Demi Moore's nomination for best actress in The Substance marked a significant comeback, while Kieran Culkin's performance in A Real Pain seemed to position him as a frontrunner for best supporting actor.
